This fireplace feature needed a remodel and an updated look. Using a special technique and concrete mix, we pressed real wood into setting concrete to give it the look and feel of wooden planks. These massive, one-piece slabs were put on the exterior and interior of the fireplace in this updated Eichler house for a cool, modern look that invokes natural elements and mid-century modernism.
Normally the process to do board forms involves pouring a massive amount of concrete in place of the existing fireplace with a pressed board exterior, but we were able to develop ultra-thin tile-like slabs using a unique pouring and molding process in our shop. We also were able to further develop our supports so that we could make seamless 14 foot long boards and create a singular paneled, retro look.
